- Every year, people celebrate World Water Day.World Water Day, an annual event aimed at raising awareness of the value of freshwater, is observed today. On this day each year, the UN releases its flagship report on water and sanitation. Clean water, sanitation, and hygiene are highlighted in the report in accordance with Sustainable Development Goal 6.aim to raise consciousness of the significance of freshwater
- Interestingly, the subject of World Water Day 2024 is “Water for Peace.” The UN claims that the subject represents coming together around water and utilizing it to promote peace. It states that cooperation among nations over water resources promotes peace, wealth, and increases capacity to withstand common difficulties. Thus, it is crucial to realize that access to water is a human right rather than only a resource.
- Significance: It goes without saying that despite the fact that water is the most vital element of life, a sizable portion of the population still suffers from a severe water shortage. 2.2 billion people, including 115 million surface water users, do not have access to safely managed drinking water, according to UN estimates. Furthermore, severe water scarcity affects around half of the world’s population for at least a portion of the year. Therefore, the UN notes that there is an urgent need for nations to band together in order to protect and conserve water.
- History: In 1992, during the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, the concept for World Water Day was introduced. The UNGA established March 22 as World Water Day in 1993.
